Reflection on Day 14 in India (originally posted January 17, 2019 on personal social media)

Day 14 in India: 9.5 hours in the car to experience the Taj Mahal...totally worth it.
The Taj Mahal is found near the city of Agra. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and is one of the seven modern wonders of the world. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for one of his wives because he loved her so much. It is white marble, carved with ornate details which includes precious and semi-precious gemstone inlays in intricate patterns. It took 17 years to complete and an estimated 22,000 workers and 1,000 elephants. Even though it is thick, the marble is translucent (with light being able to show through). This affects the appearance during the day and with moonlight at night.
There are scripture passages from the Qur’an which are done in calligraphy and were designed for linear perception of the naked eye, meaning the words at the top are adjusted in real size to give the illusion it’s all the same size from land level. Think about a railroad track. If you’re standing in the middle of the track you may know the lines are parallel as you look towards the horizon line, but they appear to be moving closer together the further down track you look.
We had a great guide who knew all the best spots to get good photos. So as promised, here’s a glimpse of our experience today.
